Benzodiazepines - Definition and Description

Benzodiazepines are a class of CNS depressant drugs, found in the form of oral tablets, oral capsules, oral solutions, injectable forms, and rectal gels. Benzodiazepines are dispensed only by prescription, indicated for a number of medical purposes: as sedatives, as anxiolytics for treating anxiety and panic disorders, as hypnotics for treating insomnia, as anticonvulsants, as antispasmodics, as preanesthetics to reduce anxiety prior to surgery, and to assist with severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Street benzodiazepines are commercially produced benzodiazepines that are either diverted prescriptions or the subjects of another form of diversion. Benzodiazepines are abused for recreational purposes and for their ability to induce sleep. Benzodiazepines are highly addictive and prone to cause physical dependence.

Summary - BZO Benzodiazepines Urine Test Panel

Oxazepam is the target compound for the BZO One Step Benzodiazepines Drug Test, detected at a cutoff level of 300 ng/mL. Oxazepam is prescribed under generic labels, in oral capsule form, for the treatment of various anxiety disorders and symptoms. Trace amounts of an oxazepam dose are recovered in the urine as unchanged oxazepam. [1]

Alprazolam cross-reacts with this test at 196 ng/mL. Alprazolam is a potent and addictive benzodiazepine, highly sought after by medical patients and recreational users. Alprazolam is prescribed under the brand Xanax, in oral tablet forms of varying shape and color, most notably in the form of a rectangular, bar-shaped tablet, often referred to by the slang name bars — and an oval, football-shaped tablet, often referred to as footballs. Generic alprazolam tablets are also available. An oral liquid concentrate is dispensed under the brand Alprazolam Intensol. Alprazolam is indicated for treating various anxiety and panic disorders and symptoms. Approximately 20% of an alprazolam dose is recovered in the urine as unchanged alprazolam[2]

Most benzodiazepines are extensively metabolized and excreted primarily as a conjugated form of the drug, with trace amounts of free, unchanged parent drug appearing in the urine. [1]
