Summary - BZO Drug Test Panel

  • Benzodiazepines are a class of CNS depressant drugs that possess similar chemistry and mechanism of action. These actions produce varying levels of relaxation, euphoria, drowsiness, and/or unconsciousness, depending on the specific drug and dose. As a result, benzodiazepines are indicated for a number of medical purposes: as sedatives, as anxiolytics for treating anxiety and panic disorders, as hypnotics for treating insomnia, as antispasmodics, as anticonvulsants, as preanesthetics to reduce anxiety prior to surgery, and to assist with severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Benzodiazepines carry a high potential for addiction and misuse, and are prone to strong physical dependence. For the benzodiazepine addicted attempting abstinence, withdrawal symptoms can be debilitating and long lasting, often requiring professional assistance. [1]

  • The anti-anxiety drug Xanax is highly sought after by both licit and illicit users. In 2013, Xanax topped the list of the most-prescribed psychiatric medications in the United States, with over 48 million prescriptions. [2] Recreational users target Xanax and other benzodiazepines for their sedative and euphoric effects, while many use them as sleep drugs. Such users typically procure their drugs, directly or indirectly, from individuals possessing legitimate prescriptions. Benzodiazepines are often misused in combination with CNS stimulant drugs, such as cocaine, amphetamine, or methamphetamine, either to neutralize the effects of the stimulant drug or to expedite sleep. [3] Misusers of opioids such as oxycodone are likely to combine the opioid with a benzodiazepine in attempt to enhance the effects of the opioid. When potent CNS drugs are combined in such fashions, or when combined with alcohol, results can be unpredictable and at worst fatal. [4]

  • Oxazepam is the target compound for the BZO One Step Benzodiazepines Drug Test, detected at a cutoff level of 300 ng/mL. Oxazepam is prescribed under generic labels, in oral capsule form, for the treatment of various anxiety disorders and symptoms. [5] Trace amounts of an oxazepam dose are excreted in the urine as unchanged oxazepam. [6]

  • Alprazolam cross-reacts with this test at 196 ng/mL. Alprazolam is prescribed under the brand Xanax, in oral tablet forms of varying shape and color, most notably in the form of a rectangular bar-shaped tablet, often referred to by the slang name bars. Generic alprazolam tablets are also available. An oral liquid concentrate is dispensed under the brand Alprazolam Intensol. Alprazolam is indicated for treating various anxiety and panic disorders and symptoms. [7] Alprazolam misusers may crush the tablets into a powder form, which is snorted. Approximately 21% of an alprazolam dose of is excreted in the urine as unchanged alprazolam. [8] In 2013, Xanax was the most-prescribed psychiatric medication in the United States. [2]

  • Most benzodiazepines are extensively metabolized and excreted primarily as a conjugated form of the drug, with trace amounts of free, unchanged drug appearing in the urine. [6]

Specificity - BZO Drug Test Panel

The following compounds are detected positive in urine by the BZO One Step Benzodiazepines Drug Test at 5 minutes. Cutoff represents the concentration of each compound required to yield a positive reading, expressed in nanograms of compound per milliliter of urine (ng/mL). A lower cutoff indicates a greater ability to detect the compound.
